Press Review

French people have very precise ideas about lifestyle and habits of English people. It seemed interesting to me to analyze in further details the stereotypes on the French culture broadcast by English. For this, I selected two articles in the English press and an image. First of all, the article 'Warm beer, bad food and the myths of entente cordiale' published on guardian.co.uk on 26 October, 1999, described the conflicting relationship between France and England from an historical point of view. He shows that a gap between the two countries. Now, the two following extracts will show what kind of gaps exist between the two countries. The second article 'How the French became frogs: English caricature and a national stereotype' is an extract of FindArticles.com at BNET (16 May, 2010) In this article, French are considered as eaters of frogs. We can make a comparison with the assimilation between English and roast beef. Food plays a key role in the pictures English people have developed in their heads. This article shows through several examples that the French figuratively frogs as well as frog-eaters. Finally, the image is an extract of the website Weider History Group. The image represents the typical "stuff" that reminds french people. In the center of the image, a frog represents a “typical French” smoking a cigarette and wearing a beret. On the right, we can see a bottle of red wine tagged with a representation of the Eiffel Tower. On the left, there is a slice of cheese. And finally, the French flag recovers the totality of the background of the image, which shows that French are ethnocentric and very proud. One more time, we can underline that food plays a key role in the representation we have of a foreign culture.
